Grasim Chemicals Accelerates Digital Transformation with SAP S/4HANA Rollout at Nagda Plant

Grasim Industries Limited has taken a major step in its digital transformation journey with the successful implementation of SAP S/4HANA at its Nagda chemicals complex, laying the foundation for standardized manufacturing processes, predictive maintenance, and future AI-driven plant operations.

The Nagda facility is the first of Grasim Chemicals’ eight caustic soda manufacturing plants to transition to the new enterprise platform. According to the company, the project forms part of a broader strategy to build a unified digital operating model across its chemicals business while improving operational reliability, data visibility, and decision-making.

Unlike a conventional ERP upgrade, Grasim opted for a greenfield implementation of SAP S/4HANA after operating on its legacy SAP platform for nearly two decades. The approach was chosen to eliminate accumulated process variations, standardize workflows across manufacturing sites, and minimize legacy system complexity. Approximately four months of the nine-month project were dedicated to blueprinting and harmonizing business processes before implementation.

One of the project’s primary objectives is to strengthen plant maintenance.

The company is targeting at least 90% adherence to scheduled maintenance activities, with all maintenance work routed through structured digital workflows. By centralizing equipment histories, service records, and maintenance notifications, Grasim aims to establish the data foundation required for predictive maintenance and improved asset reliability.

Implementing the system in a continuous-process chemical plant presented significant operational challenges.

Since production could not be halted for extended periods, Grasim relied on multiple mock cutover exercises and extensive testing using live business data before the transition. The company completed the migration within a two-day window while maintaining operations for critical product streams, demonstrating the importance of meticulous planning in process manufacturing environments.

Beyond maintenance, the digital transformation is expected to improve supply chain visibility, finance operations, logistics management, customer service, and overall process standardization. The company is also integrating permit-to-work systems with maintenance workflows to strengthen safety management across hazardous chemical operations.

Looking ahead, Grasim plans to leverage the SAP Business Technology Platform and artificial intelligence to support use cases such as predictive maintenance, automated order fulfilment, improved working capital management, and enhanced customer engagement. The long-term objective is to move toward increasingly autonomous manufacturing and business processes supported by high-quality operational data.

For the chlor-alkali and PVC value chain, the initiative reflects a broader trend toward digital manufacturing.

As producers of caustic soda and related chemicals continue to modernize operations, investments in integrated ERP platforms, Industry 4.0 technologies, AI, and predictive maintenance are becoming increasingly important for improving plant reliability, reducing downtime, optimizing asset utilization, and strengthening supply chain resilience.

Industry observers believe digital transformation will play a growing role in the competitiveness of chemical manufacturers, particularly as companies seek to balance operational efficiency, sustainability, and process safety while preparing for the next generation of intelligent manufacturing systems.
